Sometimes distributors may sell an item strictly on a per-pound basis. This way of selling has been extremely popular with seafood distributors dealing with fresh products. For example, a customer may call and order 20 pounds of cod fillet. Obviously, there is not any type of unit that can be tracked besides the pounds, unlike the catch weight or constant weights that also tracks the units like cases or pieces. Only the On Hand Weight (not the On Hand Quantity) will be maintained for these types of items.

Set up a per-pound item as you would any other with the exception of the following:

The Unit of Measure field must be set to LB. (be sure to include the period at the end).

The Track by Weight field does not need to be checked.

The Price by Weight field does not need to be checked.

The Constant Weight field can be anything, including 0, but we recommend setting it to 1.

The Average, Minimum, and Maximum Weights set to 0.

Item costs and selling prices should be defined as a per pound cost or price.

The LB. unit of measure was specifically programmed for seafood distributors to only track pounds, so it often works a little bit differently from other unit of measures in entrée.

You cannot backorder items with a unit of measure of LB.
